Ryann and Jeremy ring shot

The colors on the trees this fall have been so beautiful – and so perfect for engagement pictures! This Utah Valley bride-to-be’s first choice in locations fell through, forcing her and her photographer to get creative with the shoot.

Ryann and her fiancé, Jeremy, recently got engaged in September and had their engagement pictures done the next day by Katelyn Dalton Photography. Ryann originally wanted to have the pictures done at Tibble Fork Reservoir up in American Fork Canyon, but when they drove up it was closed off for construction. Since they had driven quite a ways already, they weren’t quite ready to turn around and pick a different location for another time.

“We just went up in the hills and the fall colors were pretty so we took pictures up there,” Ryann said.

Their proposal story couldn’t be sweeter; Jeremy, a BYU graduate from California, popped the question at Sundance during the Full Moon Lift ride. The couple went on their first date there last December during winter break, so Jeremy “proposed to me in the spot where I kissed him on the cheek on our first date.”

Though you’d never be able to tell from the final images, Ryann said the shoot was more awkward than she expected!

“I’ve never taken posed pictures with him before, so it was weird to give PDA to the camera,” she said. She had also found pictures on Pinterest that she wanted to try and recreate, but that didn’t turn out as planned, either! “We tried them all [the Pinterest images] but they didn’t turn out to be my favorite ones.” (Thanks a lot Pinterest!) “The more candid ones that we weren’t planning ended up being my favorites.”

She said she’ll be more wary about going to her bridal shoot with such high expectations.

We all know how hard choosing an outfit for a photoshoot can be (if you’ve ever taken family pictures, anyway) and Ryann sought out her friend for a little help.

“I was like, ‘Give me a shopping trip through your closet. I’ll find something I like that feels like I bought a new top for the shoot,'” she said. The flowy top she ended up wearing coincidentally matches her wedding colors: blush, sage, and burgundy.

We are so glad Ryann shared her engagement photoshoot with us! Here’s a few things we wanted to highlight from her story:

1. Be flexible! If the location you want falls through, then there is probably an even prettier one just around the corner.

2. Don’t get too attached to the adorable engagement photos you see on Pinterest – yes, they’re lovely, but we can guarantee your pictures won’t look like that! Head to your photoshoot with no expectations and trust your photographer’s experience and you won’t be disappointed as a result.

3. Save money by borrowing clothes instead of buying brand new ones. Like Ryann said, they’ll feel new to you and won’t break the bank.
